At 10 pm, I had checked in the CAMP Challenge at OPS Room. What does check-in mean? Check-in means that we have to meet up for a briefing about how does the programme carry out. What do we need to prepare for logistics and who take on which roles. So with that, we discussed how will Day 1 goes and what’re our roles. Hence I’m the Station Instructor. In this programme, It’s not me, Camp chief and Project Manager alone, there are still other associates. Their names are Nisa, Winnie, Nadirah, Qhalis, Marcus, Rafiqi, Yaya, Sahri, Maisurah.

  • Activities for Day 1
    • Low Elements
    • Lunch
    • Race Against Time
    • Wash Up / Check-In
    • Debrief
    • Dinner
    • The night Incredible Race
    • Next day briefing & Supper

There is 1 short break in between the check-in, the main purpose is for each and every one of us to plan out and also understand the flows of the activities that will be carried out on that day.

Hence, after we come back after the short break, we have a better clearer of understandings, at the same time Team Instruction can let everyone know what’s their plans, likewise for the station side. It’s similar like cross sharing. If there is anything needed to be changed by hearing others pieces of advice, this is where it will be useful at the same using this time to understand how the flow going to go, it is really important. So that we can get everyone to be on the same page.

DAY 1

IMG-20181130-WA0039

At 9.30 am, they arrived CAMP Challenge and proceed up to the Legacy Hall 2 and 3. Our Camp Chief, Zul come upfront to give the opening speech.

At 10 am, Low Elements will be conducted by the Team Instructors which is Nisa, Winnie and Nadirah. The participants are all split into 3 teams. Team 1 is Nisa, followed by Team 2 is Winnie and last but not least Team 3 is Nadirah. For the Low Elements, they did Thrust Fall, Mohawk Walk, Whale watch and Vertical Spiderweb. I’m a Station Instructor. Hence, during the activities, all station side were task to look over the safety, during that period of time, I saw frustration, laughter and happiness.

Why do they feel that way?

Frustration is because some does not want to lose because there is timing to hit. However, when they over hit the time, some teammates were frustrated. At the period, at some point, their teammates were either daydreaming or not contributing in this activities, hence frustrated. During the activities, the sun was scorching hot, they were frustrated and irritated.

Laughter is because they are enjoying the activities, and whatever they do, they feel like everything is going smoothly. At the same time, they must have also seen their friends doing something funny.

Happiness is because they accomplish their mission of finishing the activities, followed by the whole Low Elements. After Low Elements is also lunch, they are hungry, hence they are happy and excited too.

At 1 pm is their lunch. Meal briefing is conducted by Nadirah.

IMG20181128141830

IMG20181128141825

At 2 pm, Race Against Time is then conducted by Rafiqi who is the Station Master of the activities. There are 7 different activities in Race Against Time which are Lucky 5, Ping The pong, Marble Box, Turning Point, Chopminoes, Charades and Giant Skip. The above 2 photos are the formation of how are the activities been placed. During this activities, each team are split into 2 sub-teams, Hence, from 3 teams it will become 6 teams. In each sub-team, there will be team A and B respectively. Which is 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B. Each sub-team there are instructors tagging along with the team. I’m tagged along with Team 2B, from there, when the activities start, we ran, time, shout a lot. During that period, I noticed that there’s 1 girl who named Zana. I saw that she’s always left out, but in my eyes, why she want to leave herself out is because she feels that she’s a big size and others will do better than her, she wants to be in one corner and let others try out the activities.

At 5.30 pm is their debrief. During their debrief session with the Team Instructors of how the day went. At that point in time, I got this mindset of stepping in Team 2 conversation, mainly is because of Zana. I do not wish to see Zana keep staying in her own world and not interacting with their friends at the same time helping out with their team. At the very moment, Winnie gave a question asking, “How many percent do you think you guys commit in this team?” Most of the people gave 70% to 80%. However, Zana gave 30%. The next question that Winnie ask is, “What is the reason behind it?” When it comes to Zana, she does not know what reason to give, as though her mind is blank out. Hence I gave her time to think. At this moment I step in and strongly point out Team 2B, while Team 2A listen. I asked, “During the race against time, who was fed up? Raise up your hands if you’re fed up.” Majority people from Team 2B raise up their hands. After that question, I asked the reason behind it. Most of the people say that some people do not cooperate, does not help, does not want to listen. Hence, I go back to Zana again, what’s her reason behind it, why did she say 30%? She still does not want to answer. next, Winnie said, if Zana does not want to answer, nobody from Team 2 will collect their food. At that moment. I told them this, “What is a team to them? Why do they still call themselves a team when their friends are lacking behind, why none of them steps in and gives a helping hand to them? Those that are always upfront, have you ever try to give others a chance? Has everyone of you ask each and everyone of your team if they are alright? Because in my point of view, Zana is not alright, in her mind, she looks down on herself that because of her size, she feels that she could not do it. Hence, she let you guys just try those activities instead of her. Have you guys actually encourage her? Because during the activities, you guys not only didn’t encourage her, but you guys scold her. So is this a team? Now, Zana, I need you to say your reason why do you say 30% instead of having a high percentage.” Afterwards, I walk away. During dinner, I went to ask Winnie what is her answer. Winnie said, because all the while she was in her own world, that is why she did not really commit in the activities at the same time interact with their friends. But afterwards, after she told us, during dinner, she made an improvement that she actually starts to open up and talk to her friends. I was pleased because at least I made an improvement and let her open up, which is an achievement for both Zana and me.

At 6 pm it’s dinner. Meal briefing is conducted by Winnie.

IMG20181203002736

IMG20181203002741

At 7 pm is The Incredible Race that will be held at Sembawang Park at night.  What do they have to do is to go to 4 different Zone which is zone A, B, C and D. Each zone there are 4 different pictures. In each picture, they have to go there retrieve question and they will have to say the answer to the respective instructors that is tagged along with the team. After each zone, they have to complete the Challenge Station. While walking to the Sembawang Park, out of a sudden a girl went to cling her hands over me, I was shocked. I asked her what happen, she said that she was afraid of the dark. At that period, my heart was happy because these little things show that my team is trusting me. In other words, it’s similar like how they are entrusting me their life to me. During the walking process, she shared to me her stories that she will be going back to court next week. I was shocked, I asked her what happen at the same time thinking if I can make things better, at the same time, seeing if I can make her life better and improve character. She shared to me that she hates insects like lizard, cockroaches, grasshopper. However, most of their friends turn out to know about her weakness. Hence, her enemies, or what I could say that the bullies came to find her, trigger her with cockroaches and lizard. At the point of time, she was afraid. However, a few moments later, her fear turns to be in an angry mood whereby she would not be able to control her body and tried to fight back by fighting. At last, she really fights. While I heard the stories, I advise her to try to not fight, that’s once. The second is that, if your enemies were to use this method to trigger you again, do note that tries to be brave and strong, prove to them you are not scared of insects which slowly, make them think that you are not scared the insects. From there, they will think that they are just wasting time as their motive wasn’t achieved. Hence, this will make them think that you are not easily bullied. Stand strong and firm with your base. And promise me not to fight? Because if you were to heed my advice, you would not think about using your fist at the same time you can see the change that you would not be dropped out of school too. This is the time, the time you had in camp to improve yourself. During the activities, the same thing, I’m tag with Team 2B, during running and walking to respective zone, I saw improvement in Zana where she actually starts to contribute in the activities at the same time talking with her friends. Although at some point of time she wants to rest, I allow her, but most of the time, despite her size, she actually didn’t give up and consistently following us, which includes running. Which I was pleased and thankful for Winnie for allowing me to talk to the Team 2 about what I said. Other than Zana, I see that everyone is also on the same page, instead of being lazy, they actually run and find questions which I’m pleased and happy. Because I didn’t waste my time talking to them.

At 9.30 pm will then be next day briefing and supper. From then on Team Instructors will take over in bringing back to dorms. For the Station Instructors side, we will walk around to make sure they are alright as 10 pm is their lights out. So by then, we need to rush them to sleep, after they settle down, all the instructors will head to the office for debriefing and briefing for the next day flow.

DAY 2

At 7.30 am is their rise and shine. However, they were told to wake up at 6 am in the morning is because they are Malay, hence their religion is that they have to wake up early to pray. During Day 1, I forgot to mention that before lunch and dinner, they got to pray too.

What obstacles did I face during the period where they have to pray?

It’s time management. Although we know that they need to pray, however, we did not really count the amount of time where they have to wash their face, hands, arms, legs and feet and also wearing shoe and slipper. All those details inside can make a major difference in the flow. All though it feels like we are on the ball, however, base on the time, we snowball but still on the ball. But through this programme, I learn new things about their religion and some of the participant’s experience, at the same time I’m sure that I gave impact to them.

At 8 am is their breakfast. Meal briefing is conducted by Nisa.

At 9 am is their High Elements, their high elements stations are Balancing Beam, Burma Bridge, Rock Wall, Postman Walk and Parallel Wire. During the High elements, same as yesterday, I took Team 2B. At the start of preparing to wear a harness and helmet. Remember Zana? The one that I talk about yesterday. Because after the Personal Protection Device (PPE) by Rafiqi as his the Station Master for High Elements, I saw Zana was standing at one corner with her helmets on while staring her friends wearing their harness and helmets excitedly. I went over to her side and question her, “Why didn’t you wear your harness too?” At first, she did not one to response me back. One of her friends went over and question her the same question I asked her, her friend told me that she’s scared. Hence, I persuade her that, “Most of them are scared too, you’re not alone. Everyone is also wearing their harnesses, they are trying to feel how it’s like to be up there, at the same time, those who are having fear, they are also trying. So if they can so can you. When you are scared, everyone of your friends including your friends will cheer for you. When you reach the maximum height where it’s your limit, instructors will bring you down. Since I’m in your team, So I will bring you down personally.” After she hears my talk, at first she wasn’t confident enough and hence, she still did not dare to try. After wearing, we head out to try out the elements. My team first element is rock climbing. So Zana was the last. Around 30 minutes later, the second last went up and climb. While the second last person from my team was climbing, Zana came over and asked me this, “Are you will bring me down later when I reach my limit?” I replied, “Yes.” She asked me again, “But I got no confidence in you because later on, you will fly.” Hence, I told her this, “Do you trust me? Do you trust your friends? If you do, listen to me, if I were to fly, do not worry, besides both of us, there are your friends and my instructors who will help to bring me down, at the same time make sure you land safely. Do not feel the burden and look around, there are 2 or 3 people who have a similar size to you, they willing to try at the same time trust their friends and instructors. Listen to this, I do not need you to climb up all the way, all I need is you to try instead of giving up. Because if you give up, you will never experience how it’s like to climb up. Yes, it’s tough, but with us backing you, I believe you can at least overcome the fear and try to climb, climb up 1 or 2 step is also fine. At least you tried, and I’m proud of you.” After she hears, she asked me this last question, “Okay if I climb the rock wall, promise me that you would not let me climb the high element as it’s much higher compared to the rock wall.” And I agreed. At last, she went to wear a harness and helmets. While she was wearing, I was glad and proud of myself that I’m able to persuade her and it feels like a big accomplishment for me as a station instructor. Because I’m able to gain trust from my team which is what I’m happy about.

At 12 pm is lunch. Meal briefing is conducted by Winnie.

IMG20181129135659IMG20181129135650

At 1 pm is Archery Combat which is conducted by Sahri as he is the Station Master for the Activity. During Archery Combat, they had lots of fun. Despite having them to shout at their opponent’s team, “CHEAT!” They still have lots of fun because they do not wish to leave the arena, hence at some point in time, it’s just stubborn.

At 4 pm is debrief. This is where Team Instructors take over in debrief, wash up and campfire preparation.

At 7 pm its dinner. Meal briefing is conducted by Nadirah.

IMG-20181130-WA0028

At 8 pm where everyone had been waiting and practising for, which is campfire! It was lit! The Emcee’s of the campfire are Nisa, Nadirah and Winnie which is also the Team Instructors. Although during the campfire, we did stutter at some point in time, because of the team we have here, luckily we are able to overcome it. In the very end, because it was also Nadirah’s last day of an intern, Nadirah was told to sing up front as she has a nice voice at the same time, she knows how to play the guitar too.

DAY 3

At 6 am in the morning is their rise and shine. The same thing, they will go and pray like how they did in Day 2. The only difference is that after they pray, they will need to pack their bags, bring all of their stuff from the dorms back to the function hall.

At 9 am it will be breakfast. Meal briefing is conducted by Tricia which is me.

IMG_20181202_233006

At 9.40 am it will be a mass photo taking session.

At 10 am will be the 3 UPS which is Wash Up, Pack Up and Clean Up. There are 3 different venues to clean. The 3 different venues are Dorms, Legacy Hall – Legacy Hal toilet (Function hall that they have been using the past 3 days 2 nights) and Low Element Ground – Hardcourt. After their cleaning, Team Instructors used the remaining to do debrief and talk to them.

At 11 am is closing where certificates will be given out. Afterwards, they start heading to their bus, watching them go is something that it’s a little unbearable because at first, our project manager, Yu Ling, she told us that we have to beware because they will hug us. After I heard that, throughout the 2 days I was worried. But when it’s on the third day, seeing them start leaving makes it feel weird at the same time when having to get a hug by them it feels as though it’s a comfort.

During our check out, Yu Ling told us this after hiding us for 3 days is that they will only hug you when you shower them lots of love and care. When I heard that, at first was a shock at the same time it made me reflect that actually they weren’t that bad, it’s just the experience made others doesn’t dare to talk and hang out with them. However, in the Pertapis Centre, it feels like whatever it is, they can handle and learn how to bond and make friends. Which is what I was happy.

What do I feel?

I feel that regardless whether am I visiting them the first time, although it was my first time experiencing and handling these people, I get to learn a lot and really put all out till my throat soars. I feel that I’m benefitting the community because having to be able to persuade Zana 2 times and also persuading the girl who will be having court next week.

Time of activity: 3 PM – 6 PM

Time of preparation: 1.30 PM – 3 PM

No. of Hours: 4.5 Hours

Camp Chief: Ali

Project Manager: Nithiya

What is the programme about?

  •        Kayaking Coastal Clean Up

At 1.30 PM, I had checked in the CAMP Challenge at CELL. What does check-in mean? Check-in means that we have to meet up for a briefing about how does the programme carry out. What do we need to prepare for logistics and who take on which roles. So with that, After our check-in, the remaining time we did, we went to pack logistics which means more of carrying kayaks, paddle, Personal Floatation Devices (PFDs) and Water Tumbler up the lorry, and the lorry will drive it from CAMP Challenge to Sembawang Park, as the Kayaking coastal clean up programme will be held there. The back and forth trip for the lorry to bring the Kayaks is about 3 trips which take up to 1 hour and 30 mins. The photos at the bottom shown will be the logistics needed to be brought.

IMG_20180918_112101

And now, other than me and the Camp Chief and the Project Manager, there are also other crew which is known as instructors with me, their names are, Nadirah, Nisa, Maisurah, Sahri, Fattah, Jessie ( Station Master), Sheena (Driver), Huz (Safety Boat and Photo and Video)  and Jessie (Safety Boat). And now here’s another point, instead of knowing what roles we have, there’s also formation for us to follow. The formation is called Diomand Formation. Which means all the participants have to be inside the Diamond at any point in time. This is also to take care of their safety. As our responsibility is big because their lives are on our hands. So whatever happens, we have to always be there to save them. The photo at the bottom will be the roles and instructors name of who take which roles.

IMG_20180918_112047

But before everything happens, Nadirah and Maisurah will be the 2 main people to bring the participants over to the Sembawang Park. Because of they both of 2 roles which are Team Instructor and Station Instructor. How do they go? Nadirah will be in front leading them to walk and not let the participants walk in front of her, at the same time, at the back will be Maisurah who has a task of not letting participants walk behind her, only in front of her.

At 2.30PM, the participants have arrived at Camp Challenge Campsite. They did their Hydration, Energy, Attire, Refilling of Water Bottles, Toilet Breaks & Safety Checks (H.E.A.R.T.S) that is conducted by Nadirah and Maisurah before they start heading off to Sembawang Park.

At 3 pm, the participants have arrived at Sembawang Park for their kayaking coastal cleanup. The briefing was done by Jessie. After that, base on the roles we have split ourselves, we assist it accordingly and help our participants to their kayak and head off towards the water venture to start off the coastal cleanup.

While on the sea, there were times when Jessie calls for raft up. Raft up means that when Jessie put her peddles up, which means its a sign of gather which is also known as raft up. During raft up, all of the participants will join their kayak side by side. During the raft up, we share on what some of the participants have collected as part of their clean up. A pair shared that they pick up a huge destroyed container, while the rest pick up as many litters such as plastics and wrappers. the photo shown at the bottom will be the picture of how the participants joining their kayaks side by side. Because as for what we know about the participants, the participants have their own knowledge of kayaking as they all have their  1 – Star Kayaking Certified.

IMG-20180918-WA0003

After Jessie put her paddles down, this is where the participants will be excited and disperse themselves. The photo shown below is where they are excited and they disperse.

Screenshot_2018-09-18-10-49-33-98

After kayaking, Ali shared the importance of keeping the environment clean. After that, we head back to Camp Challenge Campsite for wash up before sending them off back to their school. This time around, Sahri was tasked to also joined in to lead them back to the campsite as the participants are all guys, having Nadirah and Maisurah taking care of pushing them to shower faster isn’t enough. Hence, Ali told Sahri to tag along and take care of them to check guys toilet are they done or not done.

Challenges faced:

There isn’t as much as litter as thought so Ali explains on how clean Singapore is and we should maintain the cleanliness whether on sea or on land. But there’s also another main thing that it might not so many little is due to the high tide at that point in time. Hence, there isn’s much litters too.

What I feel:

Honestly saying, having kayaking coastal clean up is a good choice and also a good programme, as for me, Singapore can be clean, at the same time dirty.  But having the effort to clean is another thing because every one of us is lazy. But when comes to act, although it needs time and effort. But in our heart. If we really did an act, it’s a good effort and throughout, I did help to spot rubbish and guiding them which way to go. As we have our very own formation to follow. So my task is like a simple task, Take care of participants, guide my partner which is also known as a student leader who is in the same kayak as me on where to go, and lastly spot rubbish for them to pick up. But at the end of the day, I had lots of fun at the same time it allows me to recap on Kayaking, as I myself have 1-Star kayaking certified. Hence, it’s been long since I’ve touched kayak and paddle with the kayak.

I have been a progressive runner ever since Secondary 2. The reason why I started running, is actually ever since primary school, there is NAPFA test whereby is to test and check how is our body doing well and also how is our physical and stamina coping? Ever since primary, because I have lots of problems at home, I tend to rely on sports hence, from that point of time when I started to train sports, honestly speaking, I got much better, I don’t really feel emotionally affected compared to the very first time I ever had problems at home. Thankfully for my perseverance in training hard, it brought me to here, which is now.

Now, which is the present, I love sports a lot. Which means now whenever I feel stress or anything, when I don’t have any swimming or taekwondo training, Running is then my main focus, as when I run, whenever the amount of sweat that came out of my body, it feels like those problems from my heads got lighter and lighter. There is also some point in time, when I feel troubles, during running, at that period of time instead of focusing on the timing of the destination, I focus on thinking the problems and wondering how to come out with a solution. That’s the tough part because if I can’t think of any solution, the troubles will then got stuck in my head until I think of something else to replace it. Now, I’ve said that I’m glad to train hard in order for me to be here is because using the stamina that I have, I managed to actually join some competition in order to win some medals. For example for that top photo, it was the star wars 10KM running marathon. Due to that, I’m thankful that I’m able to have the long stamina and hence, I’m able to run long distance.

Recently I just joined another competition when I’m having off during intern which is on the Monday, 10 September 2018. It was a track and field competition. We had to run 3.2KM. How do I get in track and field? It’s because swimming CCA and Track and Field CCA are like the close friend. Hence at that point in time, the Track and Field coach asked my Swimming mates who want to participate in running as they are selecting people for POLITE. The reason why they do this is that not a lot of people is joining. In case you are wondering, what is POLITE? POLITE is Poly versus ITE. In each CCA, there always competition like ITECC (ITE College Competition), POLITE (Poly VS ITE) and IVP (ITE VS POLY VS UNI). Although I wasn’t there to attend the briefing of Track and Field coach asking my team who wants to join. But in this generation, in Singapore, there are mobile phones which currently a majority of us is using. It’s a daily routine for us to update each other on WhatsApp, hence my swim mates asked the Swim Team group which is known as “Swim Team 2K18”. When I received the news, I volunteered myself, and when it’s confirmed, they sent us the venue, time and date of where to report on the day itself. At the same time, the track and field coach told us that if we got a medal in the CW Road Race, we will also get selected in the next trial of POLITE which is the next day, 13 September 2018, 9 am to 5 pm at ITE College Central.  However, now we have to concentrate one the current competition which I need to report 12 pm on the 10 September 2018. Before going, I had some light snacks.

When I’ve reached, I’m nervous, because it been long since I joined the running competition. As for my point of view, not only me are running, there are still some people who are from Track and Field, Swimming and some other people from this school but from other courses.

At 2 pm, boys open have started first, hence we have to wait for roughly another 30 Mins in order for girls open to start. At 2 pm-2.45 pm, is where girls open starts. The nervousness strikes in.

The photos at the bottom will be the process of my running.

After running, I feel relax at the same time I feel that the moment I reach the finish line, my mind and heart felt happy. As it’s been long since I ran due to my work and my commitment to other sports too. I feel that my mind got not so much of trouble at the same time I feel that once I reached the finish line, it’s a step closer to my next destination of the path. When everything ends, its time for price presentation. While they were saying out the names, I wanted to take water, suddenly a voice came out and say my name, “Tricia Too”. I’m shocked at the same time surprised, as I didn’t expect I will win a medal. So I went up to collect price with both shocked and elated face. Because yesterday is my best day I ever had after having a tough day the day before. At the bottom, its the photo of my medal.

IMG_20180908_234258

Having to win a medal again, it feels great. Honestly speaking, it feels like I got praised by others. Although I’m not the best. I know that I did great as I’ve put in my best effort in it. After all the ceremony, it ended at 6 pm. After the ceremony, I drop by swimming pool and cool myself down by swimming. Remember that I’ve stated at the starting of if we got the medals at the end of the day, we will also get selected in the next trial of POLITE which is the next day, 13 September 2018, 9 am to 5 pm at ITE College Central. When going home, I feel exhausted at the same time, my mind was thinking about having to massage my muscles because my muscles are tired.

I’m thankful to have the stamina for me to run long distance and at the same time, I can use that stamina that I have to distress myself and more. Whenever when I’m free, I will use the time that I have to run progressively to keep fit at the same time, I don’t feel that I’m just wasting my day instead I will make full use of it to make my life meaningful.

This is where the whole journey starts. The moment when I report to ITE College Central, I was clueless as it was my first time going to ITE Central. Our task is to report to the stadium and get change to our attire. The photo that was shown on top, it’s the attire we were given. When we were all ready for the competition, I feel really nervous. As there are lots of potential runners competing at the same time.

IMG_20180913_152520

There is my swimming coach who is here to support me and my swimming friends and there are also some other teachers who are hosting and supporting us. Having their support, make me have the courage to compete with them at the same time I’m still nervous because challenging with them, it’s a new obstacle for me to face.

IMG_20180913_152504

The above photo shown is the Track and Field teacher, who is called Mr Rama. In case you don’t know where is he, the easiest description is the guy with less hair while holding the shirt.

Screenshot_2018-09-13-14-25-52-10

While standing at the track, my nervousness strikes in. Having me standing together with all the runners, makes me feel that I will be the last, as instead of me. There are still other schools and my school which are ITE College West, Central and East. In case you don’t know how to differentiate the different school, wearing blue shirt will be ITE College West, wearing red shirt will be ITE College Central and wearing yellow shirt will be ITE College East.

Screenshot_2018-09-13-14-26-02-13

At that point in time, there will be 1 person, standing near the grass patch using the loud hailer to speak and the horn in order to let the race begin. The moment when I see the person approaching, I got even more nervous. And now in order for the race to begin, here it comes… The person said, ” The race will START, IN 3….. 2….. 1…”, and then she pressed the horn, “BEEP….!!” All the nervousness feelings were gone, but the mood change in an instant. Everyone was more focus on the competition that talking to friends at the point in time.

The process of the race of me is shown at the bottom.

Screenshot_2018-09-13-14-26-29-78 Screenshot_2018-09-13-14-26-50-13

After that round of the competition which is the long distance of 3 km, there is still other competition like 100m, 4x100m and 800m. I have volunteered myself in competing 3 km, 100m and 4x100m. After finish running 3 km, I feel exhausted as if I feel out of breath. During the process of me resting, I feel dehydrated because while running, the sun was scorching hot. But thankfully I have my friends being with me at the same time they care about me asking how am I, at the same time asking if my toe was okay? The reason why they say that is because, I think I overstrain myself as the previous day, the competition was also long distance, and now the next day, I’m also competing long distance, the only difference is that instead of having only long distance, there is also the short distance race and relay.

IMG_20180913_162533 IMG_20180913_162612The above photo that shows how the preparation goes when having a 100m race, its very compact because there are 2 hits, so everyone will gather there as at that position, it has the accurate measurements. After the 1st hit is done, give them around 2 to 3 mins to prepare and it will the second hit.

IMG_20180913_162626

Above is a photo of the 4x100m race, whenever when there is a relay, there will always be a starting block in between that you will see above. There is also another alternative whereby when there is also another short distance like 400m race which is also 1 round around the stadium, they will use the starting block.

IMG_20180913_162559 IMG_20180913_162549

After all of our races, instead of us having competition, the teachers are also having competition. The above photo shows that they participated in the race and also put in their best effort.

Screenshot_2018-09-13-14-28-31-26

After everything, there is also a prize presentation. However, I didn’t get any but I didn’t feel sad, because in my heart, I know I did my best, at the same time compared to me and them, they train a lot tougher than me, that is where I acknowledge their hard work. I’m thankful that I get to have this chance to experience with different runners. I’m really honoured to participate in the Track and Field competition for my school.

It’s been long since I ran. On the 1st October 2018 it was my off day.  The reason why I ran during evening time is because evening weather is much better because its more cooling compared on the afternoon.  Sorry for not posting a lot the past few days ever since my latest post as I was busy in my work. I was tag in various programmes. At the same time, I’m honoured to be tag in different programmes,  because I get to experience the learning process and from there, I got to adapt better and improve myself into a better person and also instructor. Due to the stress and the tiredness I have received due to programmes, thanks to the run, I feel relief after so long compared to having weights on my shoulder.

While running, I saw the moon that caught my eye, because the process of the moon, the colour is different. Its from red to yellow to white according to the photos below.

The scenery was beautiful to the point it made me reflect about what is going on in my life. It made me realized that if you enjoy the process of what you are doing now, instead of thinking you are suffering, but instead you will think that whatever you have been through, its all about getting knowledge. The more you learn, the more knowledge you will have and hence you will get a better future. Because in future, you are able to use the knowledge and apply on it which you can also help others by teaching them in case they don’t have much more knowledge, with that it proves that you learn a lot at the same time, it can make you recap.

I have been learning Taekwondo ever since I’m in Secondary 1. Which means from Secondary 1, 2013 till now 2018 is around 5 years plus. Ever since I start joining Taekwondo, it wasn’t my idea, it was my dad. The main reason why he wanted me to join is that he wants to protect, he wants me to learn how to defend myself. And at that point in time, it was where we started moving to our new house, Blk 680. That’s when that we found out that there were Taekwondo lessons under our block and I’m shocked at the same time excited. Hence I started learning from the lowest rank which is a White Belt until Black which is known as 1st Dan. At the bottom, you will see my progression of how I manage from the past until now.IMG20180501005242

For the belt ranking, it goes like this, “White(Beginner), White-Yellow, Yellow, Yellow-Green, Green, Green-Blue, Blue, Blue-Red, Brown, Brown-Black, Black 1st Dan(My current rank), Black 2nd Dan, Black 3rdDan, Black 4th Dan, Black 5th Dan, Black 6th Dan, Black 7th Dan, Black 8th Dan, Black 9th Dan and lastly Black 10th Dan.” Based on the history, there are some people who managed to have the highest ranking which is Black 10th Dan in the United States of America. Shocking to know, I’m surprised that they are able to make it, but what I know of is mainly it’s all because of hard work and motivation.

Having me to start learning Taekwondo is my honoured. As I’m able to have a great coach who has been there teaching me ever since Day 1 that I started learning how to throw punches. His name is Sir Rex. At the bottom, you will see a photo that I took with him on 31st August 2018.

IMG_20180909_224335

Further on, the photos that are at the bottom, you will see my friends who are, Jason and Syed who have been with me learning Taekwondo ever since Day 1 and also another coach who is Sir Henry and recently join taekwondo the last 5 months. Because of him, I overcame my obstacles. At the bottom will see their photos. The reason why it wasn’t put on 31st August, is because Syed has not been coming to Taekwondo often due to his studies and his commitment at work. Whereas Jason and Sir Henry are away to attend the competition, Jason is the one who takes part in the competition in sparring and Sir Henry is the judges. Other than Sir Henry, there are still other judges.

Here’s how the lessons go, there will always be lessons every Friday, 8 pm to 9.30 pm, unless the public holiday, of course, there won’t be any class. For the certificates wise, in Taekwondo terms, it’s known as grading. And before grading, there will always be a Pre-Preparation GRading in order for us to be prepared for our grading and be confident with what we are doing. From White Belt to Brown Belt, what will be tested mainly patterns. Now in case you don’t know what does pattern means. Patterns are more of knowing our own belt steps, the main purpose of having us to learn patterns is because we can use that to protect us, to have self-defence. However, memorizing it, with our brains, with all sorts of knowledge in our brain, it might be tough, but here what it is, the main purpose its difficult to memorize, it’s because it requires us to practice and if there is any question or anything to clarify. Coaches are there to correct your steps at the same time to make you feel confident before you enter the grading hall.

So now, do you recall me saying that there is 1 coach which is Sir Henry who helps me overcome my obstacles? Here is the story, there was my one and only time that at the journey of having to have my brown-black to black grading. That was the first ever time I failed my grading test. At the point of time I was depressed, but at the same time, he was there to help me, to correct my pattern, at the same time, I forgot to mention that, grading from brown-black onwards will be a little special. Because during grading, they will test us in Taekwondo pledge and also a few tests about how well we know World Taekwondo Federation. There will be 2 photos at the bottom which is the information of what do we need to memorise.

IMG20180910010712IMG20180910010722

And not to mention, instead of having to test our patterns during our grading, there are also sparring. But instead, how their sparring works is whereby there is no point of contact, but instead we will still have people in front of you, but instead sparring is more of showing the judges all type of different kicks and punches, like turning kick, front kick, side kick, back trust, reverse kick, 360 turning kick, jumping front, short punch, long punch etc. While showing or type of kicks and punches, when we are showing them, we have to also show them how do we dodge. What we do to retreat is either sliding back, sliding sideways whether is left or right its fine, depends on the situation, there’s even slight jump back or slight jump to the side. While retreating, we can choose to either continue retreating or at the same time when retreating we can choose to throw out a short punch or long punch and also some kicks like short turning kick or long turning kick is also fine.

The second time when I take my grading after 3 to 4 months, I get to try one more time, this time around I put lots of effort in it, whether by shouting or by power, I did my best. And the last thing I did was actually pray, Hope that this time around I can pass. As previously when I failed, I got stressed at the same time pressured thinking whether I can do well again or thinking that what if I were to fail again, money that my dad spent is going to be wasted. Hence because of that thought, I put in my best effort and survived. This is where I’m thankful to all my coaches and my friends and of course my family. Because all of them gave me confident, courageous at the same time, it felt that there are a group of people who are cheering for me to do well in the grading. Due to those cheers, my motivation went up high to the point I feel that I’m living in nowhere.

Now, after the second grading, when I got back my results, I’m more than happy at the same time its a journey whereby it makes me learn all sorts of things, for example, learning how  to use my brain and think at the same time of course using the technique that I was thought and protect myself.

Hence, although having an intern. I will still go back once in while to find out how they are doing, at the same time more of repaying back on how hard they put in so much effort to make me improve and learn. So which means, recently I just went back with is on the 31st August 2018 and 7th September. When I return, the catch up in talking is really non-stop, this is where I feel that Taekwondo is special and unique to the point that it feels that Taekwondo is like my 3rd home. The main reason why I say so is that having to learn Taekwondo is a fortunate thing for me, as I myself organize my time myself, for example, the previous post it’s swimming, the training is on the Monday and Wednesday and now Taekwondo is on Friday. I like how that whenever when I feel stress or anything that is bothering me, sports are always there for me to distress myself and not keep overthinking. This is why I am glad that I am interested in sports.

It’s been 2 months plus ever since the last time I went back for Taekwondo. Because during the 2-month plus, my intern was hectic at the same time it is very hard to make extra time for training. After all, my body does not have enough rest. When I went back, I was nervous, because I’m not sure if I can still remember Blue to Poomseh pattern. When the lesson starts, what we need to do first is warm up.

IMG20181130202126

After the warm-up, I was shocked that there are Physical Training (PT). I was shocked because all the while there wasn’t much PT, which I’m happy. Because I can use this time to train myself to become fitter. But this PT mainly is about running and kicks. Using the cone as our markings, we have to run forward, sideways and backwards. Afterwards, it was about jumping and using your feet to step according to the figure of 8 as fast as possible without stepping on the cone. Last but not least is about kicking. After using the cone, is about practising the patterns as grading is coming up. So first thing first was to untie belt and tie back, at last practice our own pattern. In the end, for now, I practised blue red. The reason why is because afterwards Sir Henry asked me to teach blue red as they didn’t know their own patter clearly. Hence, I did not get a chance to do the rest of the pattern. But it was great recapping my pattern although there was pressure in me.

The next 2 weeks I won’t be attending Taekwondo lesson to help out is because I will be attending work, hence by the time I come back in 2 weeks time, hopefully, I get to try out most of the pattern

I have been in Swimming CCA ever since the start of Institute of Technical Education (ITE) Year 1 at ITE College West. This photo was taken on Wednesday, 29 August 2018, Monday, 3 September 2018 and Wednesday, 5 September 2018. In my school, there will be swimming every Monday and Wednesday, 5 pm to 7.30 pm. There will also be another additional workout for us before swimming starts, it’s a form of physical training whereby to train us in building muscles, stamina and cardio etc. The physical training will start from 4 pm to 5 pm. As soon as I start having swimming as my first priority during school time, it keeps me fit, allow me to relax my mind at the same time I’m able to get rid of stress throughout that period of time. There is some situation whereby when I was swimming, it helps me to think properly at the same time concentrating on memorising information that needed to be tested the next day or a few days later. All in all, the class was great, I have a great coach too called Mr Wee, His full name is Mr Jason Wee. He is a great coach whereby because of my effort and my commitment, he recognises it and appointed me as President in Swimming. Due to that, I work extra hard and make sure I am able to take over this role fully.

During the first day of CCA, it was all so awkward for me to expose to swimming with my sleeveless swimsuit after so long and also having to not know anyone at there which makes me feel weird. But I’m thankful to have my friendly senior to be with me and also to be there to care for me. Due to that, it makes me feel like the pool is my second home. There are times after swimming, we will have dinner together to bond together to know everyone better. If not, during the physical training, there are times that we don’t do the workout, but instead, we will play some games to hype up the energy and also let the day pass with fun instead of tiring ourselves out with just exercise and exercise without fun.

A few days later, Mr Wee asked me this questions, what strokes do you know, I said all the strokes except butterfly, and after he heard that. The next few training onwards, he teaches me how to swim butterfly and also corrected my stroke for backstroke. As his main point is for me to get into competition and within a few weeks, there’s progress. I’m thankful to have this coach to teach me patiently which if it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t improve so much. There are a few competitions coming up, at last, he signs me up for backstroke. When I heard the news, I was shocked at the same time, honestly speaking I was stress because it is my first time having a swimming competition. Last time when I was small, the only test I did was the swimming test of Bronze, Silver and Gold. And at that point in time, all I had was nervous, thinking whether I can make it. At last, I made it, I passed all my test! On the day of the competition, I did my very best without regrets. At the bottom, it will be photos of my bronze, silver and gold certificates and also my medals I won at Swimming.

On the 2nd competition, I had an amazing improvement, I can’t say it’s the best, but all I can say is I did a great effort in pushing. At that point in time, I’m exhausted as well, as there was 2 competition for me, 50m backstroke and also 100m backstroke for me to compete. In the end, I did my best. At the bottom will be a comparison of my 1st and 2nd competition results. The 1st competition timing will be on the left-hand side and the 2nd competition timing will be on the right- hand side.

During my internship, although I didn’t go back so often like how I use to be, whenever when I have time, I will drop by and swim. Now, 2 months plus have passed ever since I started working at CAMP Challenge as an intern. But there will always be some part of me that I’m worried about my swim team. Because I’ve put lots of effort into the swim team and not having to come back often makes me worried a lot. But due to trust, I trusted my friends, my Vice Captain to take good care of them and hopefully able to get lots of people joining swimming. Whenever when I got the time to go back, the next day when I return back, it made me feel lively and at the same time, it doesn’t make me feel stress as much as I do before swimming. It feels great! I’m thankful to have swimming as my CCA and at the same time, I’m thankful that I have a great coach and also great friends and seniors around me who willing to teach me. Teaching me how to grow, how to be independent, how to lead the team well at the same time, how to manage the team well in making them feel swimming is the best CCA. But after all, responsibilities lies on me because being President isn’t that easy. However, I learn lots of things that I can ever imagine.

It’s been 2 month plus ever since the last time I went back for swimming. Because during the 2-month plus, my intern was hectic at the same time it is very hard to make extra time for training. After all, my body does not have enough rest. Hence, yesterday I went back training, I realised that my stamina has dropped, at the same time, my muscle has shrunk because I did not train throughout this 2 month plus. When I went back, it was mainly about swimming because last Saturday they just finished their POL-ITE competition. In case you don’t know what is POL-ITE again, It’s Poly Vs ITE. Hence, yesterday was just casual swimming.

So we were task by Ming Zhou to swim 16 laps of 25 metres as warm up. Ming Zhou is our last 2 batch who had the position of president. The total is 800 metres of warm up. What I was task to swim was Freestyle for the whole 14 laps and the last 2 laps will be Butterfly. About 4 laps, I feel the pant at the same time my pace started to slow down because I didn’t use to it at the same time my stamina wasn’t like last time. But at last I managed to pull myself up and continue. Although it’s tough, it was fine. After the warm-up, to past time, we push off from the wall and plunge to see how far is our glide and also breaststroke start to glide. We start from Lane 9, However, my ending point after I glide was Lane 6 to 7. From then on, I realise that I had to work on my streamline body posture because if my streamline isn’t straight, it can affect the gliding. After the whole thing, we chat a little and went to shower.

After showering, I came out of the toilet and saw this sight, the sky was nice, it’s like how the day passes so fast where how tough moment has passed and from this moment start will the sweet moment till another tough moment has arrived. The scenery made me look back about me because right now, I’m a 2nd year in Nitec in Fitness Training in ITE College West. It made me think how far I’ve been through from member to President in Swimming. However, thinking that I will be back in this school again due to my grades, I will be back as the 1st year in Higher Nitecor 2nd year in Higher Nitec. Currently, I will have to wait for the result to come out in order to know what is my next move.

After POL-ITE, it will be IVP. Which is there ITE Vs POL-ITE Vs University. IVP will be on the January. Hence currently, now we are trying to train the juniors to be better and get stronger. But at the same time, after my intern ends, I have some free time, So I will be back to attend swim training and take good care of my juniors.

After the last training which is on the 26 of November.  I was busy with work. However on the 19 of December I went back to train is because although POL-ITE just ended.  But during the mid of January, IVP will starts.  That’s when ITE, Poly and University will have competition.  Hence this time round although they just finished their competition,  but it’s not time for them to rest fully.

At 2pm, we started our dryland.  Why is that so ? Mainly is to improve their stamina and speed. What Dryland I plan was this:

– Around 2plus we will do warm up
– then exit the stadium nearest gate, then start with running outside of school, then come back.
– Go up and down the stairs x 10
*20 secs rest, jog in the spot*

*3 sets – 10 secs rest after each exercise, not sets but exercise*
– push up x 20
– burpees x 20
– crunches x 20
– mountain climber x 20 counts of 4
– squat Jump x 20
– squat — hold for 1min to 2min (see how on that day)
– calf raises x20

After the whole workout. We were all breathless,  hence we went to the pool to do some light swimming as its been long since they swam m after wards cool down.

Service Learning

My expectation is to help out and volunteer in contributing actively to find solution. My another expectations is to improve myself and also take up the responsibilities to take care of my participants or citizens.

How?

To be tagged for Pro-bono/ Subsidized programme.

Pro-bono means denoting work undertaken without charge. For example Corporate Social Responsibilities which we can teach them high Elements, Kayaking etc.

Healthy Living

My expectations is to have my own healthy living by doing sports in my own time and also in my own participation in school when I have my own free time. I will also have to adapt my own healthy habits and balanced diet to keep fit.

How: Swimming and running/Progressive over 18 months

Community Leadership Initiative

My expectations is to take on leadership to plan out the programme and at the same time identify participants need through understanding of cultural differences. By taking on this role it will be a tough side as there is a lot of things to be done and check. But this is all about growing up and be independent and also lastly, if there is mistakes, learn and re-learn. To showcase leadership skills will be a tough time, but learning it is all about the effort and the experience to learn from it too.
